New Sony EX1-R announced

There are rumours about a new Sony EX1-R camera – a MK-II so to speak – to be shown in Paris on the 20th.

New functionality is said to include SD recording, better/different viewfinder, HDMI output and more!

I still believe the Sony EX1, in combination with a 35mm DOF adapter like the RedrockMicro Encore (M2E), is currently the best digital film solution on the market today, within it’s price range.
Cameras like the Canon 7D are all very nice, but they are not videocams… Let’s see what the new Red Scarlet brings (this century guys?). If i had to spent money on a new <10k camera today, i would again buy the Sony EX-1.

Let’s see what Sony comes up with in Paris…

Martin.

    This is laughable!

What exactly constitutes a GOOD videocam? Something “ergonomic” (read: what I’m used to with AF and lots of DOF…i.e. happy-snap cam) or something which produces SUPERB image quality without micky-mouse add-ons…but DOES require disciplined cimematography to utilize sucessfully.

The Canon 5d2/7D is even more of a challenge to use for wildlife and underwater…but the results (particularly the low light capability) are well worth the adaptive learning curve.

The IQ of an EX1/3, particularly with DOF add-ons, doesn’t come close to dedicated Canon glass. (30/40mbps @ H264 also does the lenes justice)

I did the comparison…and sold the Sony.

Yes and no, however in addition to a 35mm adapter, you would need a higher quality recording device such as a Convergent Designs nanoFlash XDR which records XDCAM I-frames at 160MB/s or the AJA Ki Pro which records ProResHQ. A Cineform solution, which uses wavelet instead of Fourier transforms, such as the CineDeck HD could be even better.

I fully agree, but there is still the issue of budget ofcourse; but you have a point there!

The Canon 7D is not a videocam. No zebras, no peaking, no autofocus, no auto aperture, no xlr audio, no audio monitoring, no pictureprofiles/gamma control/color correction, no zoomcontrol – shall i go on?
